Thanks for the comments guys. I have 2 partners in my main job activity, a start-up in the enterprise storage field. Part-time I help out a little with my dad's venture, Take11.com. I also do consulting work on an extremely part-time basis with a single client.
So, I work alone in this room but not on projects.
The 6 monitors in the back are connected to a single Mac Pro w/ 8 cores & 12 GB of RAM. There's a Xeon linux box next to the Mac Pro with serial console; no video, for development as well. I use VMware heavily. In the closet (pictures on my flickr page), there's 2 small shuttle-like PCs for network infrastructure, and two more Core2 towers, one for DMZ infrastructure, one for testing. I really need about 8 more testing machines, but we're trying to keep the hardware costs down.
The way I really use the screens are:
- the 6 in the back are for coding. The left 3 screens (19, 20, 20 in portrait mode) are for terminals, gdb, scripts, log output--I use tabbed terminal windows, with about 10 tabs per window.
- the middle 30", and the right two 20" monitors are for code. Firefox & Safari run over on the right two 20" and I tab those in and out.
- the two monitors in the front are a 24" iMac and a 24" Gateway. I use this system for posting on deskopgraphy :-), writing docs, bugzilla triage, consulting development and testing, etc. More VMware here, but not too much--the iMac only has 4 GB of RAM.
- there's also a MacBook Pro with 4 GB for email and travel (it's obscured here, but it's on the bridge between the two desks).
- in the closet there's 2 monitors for the network/test boxes. There are just cheap 17" LCDs.
If you've been keeping score, that's 11 monitors. :-)
Also, if you're wondering about electricity, there's a 60 amp subpanel in the office behind the chimney, 5 circuits for office outlets + 1 for the fans and overhead lights. With the 4x15 + 1x20 circuits for outlets, I have about 9600 watts of power headroom. Fortunately, I'm nowhere close to that. :-)
Yep, I have two customized Freestyles with the 20" cable. They charge a fortune for it, but it's worth it over the 8" model (which I also have the PC version of).

amazing. beautiful.. Do you work alone?
Gustaf Sjöberg 21 Oct, 2008
This is so inspiring. I wish I had the need for more than two monitors (one for coding and drawing; one for tests and reference).
Come to think about it, I could actually use a third -- one more for monitoring git commits and server logs :)

Man, that is a ton of screen real estate, how do you use it all?

So, do you lose a window once in a while? I mean someone could seriously get lost on the screens, right?

By taking a closer look I think that I like the keyboard that you got there - is it the Kinesis Freestyle one?

where's a cup of hot coffee?
Stefan Kohler 22 Oct, 2008
The keyboard looks pretty bad ass. I looked at the prices and you were right about the fortune! ;-)
Mitch Haile 22 Oct, 2008
Yeah, they are expensive. But they are completely worth it if you have broad shoulders--my shoulders are not nearly as tense as they were a year ago.
Brian Rosner 23 Oct, 2008
This rocks!

That's really make me laugh. I think you need a mirror to look at your back :)
Awesome.
